Signs and symptoms of oral cancer

Oral cancer develops from abnormal cell growth in the mouth and surrounding areas. When detected early, the rate of successful treatment is considerably higher, which is why routine screenings are an important part of dental care for patients of all ages. Those over 45 are at greater risk, but oral cancer can affect anyone.

Symptoms that warrant a screening include:

  • White or dark red discolored patches inside the mouth or on the lips.
  • Unfamiliar lumps or unusual changes in the texture of oral tissue.
  • Sores that do not heal, persistent bleeding, or areas of numbness.
  • An unusual feeling in the tongue, a change in taste, or difficulty swallowing.

If you have noticed any of these changes, it is worth bringing them up at your next appointment or scheduling a visit sooner.
Risk factors for oral cancer

Several behaviors and conditions are associated with a higher likelihood of developing oral cancer:

  • Smoking or using tobacco products including cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco.
  • Heavy or frequent alcohol consumption, particularly when combined with tobacco use.
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection of the mouth or throat.
  • Prolonged or excessive exposure to direct sunlight.
  • A poor diet low in fruits and vegetables.
  • A personal or family history of oral cancer.
  • A history of leukoplakia, which appears as a thick, whitish patch inside the mouth.
  • Being male, as oral cancer is statistically more common in men than in women.

Prevention, detection, and treatment

Spotting early signs

During an oral cancer screening, Dr. Josh Neubauer will carefully examine the inside of your mouth, under your tongue, and along your gumline for any red or white patches, unusual sores, or suspicious changes in tissue. The outer throat and neck may also be gently felt for lumps or abnormalities. The exam is quick, non-invasive, and routinely performed as part of a comprehensive dental checkup.

Diagnosis and treatment

If anything concerning is identified during a screening, further evaluation will be recommended. This may include a biopsy, where a small sample of tissue is removed and sent for laboratory analysis, or imaging studies such as X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, or an MRI. Treatment for confirmed oral cancer depends on the type, location, and stage, and may involve surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy, typically coordinated with a specialist.

Preventing oral cancer

While not all cases are preventable, there are meaningful steps you can take to lower your risk:

  • Attend routine teeth cleanings and dental exams so any changes can be caught early.
  • Avoid tobacco products in all forms.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation or not at all.
  • Limit prolonged direct sun exposure and use UV-protective lip balm.
  • Eat a balanced diet with adequate fruits and vegetables.
  • Perform regular self-checks of your mouth and report any new or persistent changes to your dentist.

Schedule your exam and consultation

Your visit begins with a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, soft tissues, and bite. We want to understand the full picture of your oral health before recommending any course of treatment.
Before moving forward, we take the time to learn about your health history, any concerns you may have, and what you’re hoping to achieve. Our goal is to make sure you feel informed and comfortable every step of the way. Contact us today to book your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most adults, an oral cancer screening is recommended at least once a year as part of a routine dental exam. Patients with known risk factors, such as tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, or a prior history of oral cancer, may benefit from more frequent screenings. Your dentist will advise the appropriate schedule based on your individual risk profile.

A visual oral cancer screening is often incorporated into a routine dental exam, but it is a distinct part of the visit. Some practices also offer additional screening tools, such as special lights or dyes that help identify abnormal tissue that may not be visible to the naked eye. If you are unsure whether a screening has been included in your past visits, it is worth asking at your next appointment.

If your dentist identifies an area of concern, it does not automatically mean cancer is present. Many unusual patches or sores turn out to be benign. However, a referral for further testing, such as a biopsy or imaging, will be recommended to determine the nature of the tissue and rule out anything serious. Early investigation is always better than waiting.

Yes. In its early stages, oral cancer may cause little to no discomfort, which is one of the reasons routine screenings are so valuable. By the time symptoms become noticeable, the condition may have already progressed. Regular dental visits provide an opportunity for your dentist to identify changes that you may not have noticed yourself.

Certain strains of human papillomavirus, particularly HPV-16, are associated with a subset of oral and throat cancers known as oropharyngeal cancers. HPV-related oral cancers have been increasing in prevalence and can affect individuals who do not use tobacco or alcohol. If you have questions about HPV and your oral health risk, this is worth discussing with your dentist or physician.

Most canker sores and minor mouth irritations heal on their own within one to two weeks. A sore or patch that persists beyond two weeks without improvement, grows larger, or is accompanied by other changes such as numbness, difficulty swallowing, or a lump in the neck should be evaluated by a dentist. Duration and progression are the key indicators that something warrants further attention.

The screening is straightforward and non-invasive. Your dentist will visually examine the inside of your mouth, lips, tongue, and throat, and may gently feel along your jaw and neck for any unusual swelling or lumps. The process takes only a few minutes and causes no discomfort. It is often completed as a natural part of your regular dental exam without requiring a separate appointment.

Hands down, the greatest dental care you can find! I first joined this practice many years ago and still talk about how amazing they are to this day. I had to move out of the city for work over five years ago (and now live over an hour away), and I genuinely miss coming here, as strange as that sounds for a dental office! I’ve been to many different dentists since moving, and absolutely nothing compares to the thorough care you get here. Highly, highly recommend.

I had a great experience at Park Crossing Dentistry. From the moment I walked in, everyone was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and genuinely helpful. The staff were knowledgeable and took the time to clearly explain everything, which made me feel comfortable and confident in my care. What stood out most was how invested they were in actually helping me and addressing my concerns. You can tell they truly care about their patients, not just the appointment. I’m very impressed overall. 10/10 experience and I’ve officially found my new dentistry home. Highly recommend!

Relevant Truth: I grew up very poor, and as a result, we couldn't afford to go to the dentist. Fast forward to my high school graduation, and I joined the US Army, which (in only the Army way) caught me up on my dental work with "military kindness." Needless to say, that was traumatizing, and since then I have always feared dentist offices. So, when I find one, I am beyond grateful. When selecting a dentist, my MOST IMPORTANT factor is patient empathy and financial integrity. I can say without doubt that Park Crossing Dentistry has that. My hygienist, Olivia, was constantly checking in with me to ensure that I was at ease. She informed me that if I ever felt I needed a break, all I had to do was raise my right hand. Additionally, when I had questions, she would pause and welcome them. She had a sound understanding of patient anxiety and how best to support patients while also performing the necessary work. Dr. Powell was my dentist, and I must say there was an important event that meant a great deal to me. During my examination, she noted a potential need for a filling; however, she didn't feel it was necessary yet, and doesn't believe in drilling and cutting teeth unnecessarily. This decision was more than just an appreciation of my teeth; it was prioritizing my teeth over her bottom line. That speaks volumes to me. So, as long as they are there, I'm there, and when you go there, ask for them!

Dental anxiety champions PLEASE keep reading. I would genuinely give a million stars if I could! If you're like me and googled "best dentists in Charlotte", there is a reason these guys are on the list. My first interaction of calling to make an appointment was seamless, quick and professional. THEN I got the opportunity to meet some of the most amazing dental staff I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I HATE (used to) the dentist from bad experiences in the past and this entire practice changed that. So kind, GENTLE, explains everything and patient. I had a cleaning and went back for fillings and it was a surprisingly easy process for everything. Dr. Neubauer was amazing, very careful and considerate of everything. (Did I mention gentle and not scary?) I am so thankful to have found a practice like this to change my perspective on dental care. I really appreciate the entire team there, thank you!

Having recently moved to Charlotte, this was my first visit. I was due for a cleaning and exam and was glad to get both in one visit with little wait time. Kudos to all the staff with whom I interacted: Jessie, front desk, Olivia, hygienist, Dr. Powell, dentist, and Shawn, Treatment Coordinator. Each was knowledgeable, informative, and especially congenial. I look forward to Dr. Powell doing some needed repair work next month. She carefully explained my options and answered all my questions.
