Wisdom Teeth Removal in Pineville NC

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom tooth removal is often seen as a rite of passage into adulthood since those third molars, as they are often referred to, do not start to surface until a person reaches their teen years or adulthood. At Park Crossing Dentistry, we help you understand why oral surgery is necessary, what to expect and how you should prepare for it.

Can you get wisdom teeth removed the same day?

Scheduling your wisdom teeth removal is on a case-by-case basis. Yes, in some scenarios, you can have your wisdom teeth removed on the same day. Depending on the severity, you may have to schedule your wisdom teeth removal for another day. Wisdom tooth removal is a surgery, and any time you have a surgery where a part of your body will be cut open, you must take the proper steps to prevent infection and inflammation. You should also not eat or drink for at least eight hours before your oral surgery to avoid vomiting during your wisdom tooth removal.

You will be given a prescription for antibiotics to take before and after surgery to prevent the risk of infection and dry socket. In this dental condition, the blood clot that forms after your wisdom teeth removal is dislodged. Most patients are concerned about pain, so taking antibiotics starting the week before surgery is important: an infection could lead to swelling, and pus in the mouth. You will want to follow the instructions on your antibiotic carefully to avoid these preventable side effects.

Your oral surgeon may prescribe an oral steroid to reduce swelling. Depending on the type you’re given, you may have a five-day or seven-day pack of pills that you must take at certain times during the day with or without food, starting before your surgery and completing the pack a few days after surgery.

Lastly, you may receive a prescription for an antibiotic mouthwash before your surgery and after, but not the 24 hours immediately after your extraction. Again, just like with your antibiotic and oral steroid, you should follow the instructions on the packaging to learn when you need to start using it for the best results.

How long is the waiting list for wisdom teeth removal?

After you have been informed that you need to have your wisdom teeth removed, you will then pick a date where you can take time off of school or work to recover that also works with your surgeon’s schedule. Many people like to schedule their surgery on a Friday morning so that they can spend the weekend recovering and, depending on how well they recover, return to work or school on the following Monday or Tuesday. Call our office at (704) 541-5059 to find out what the current wait time is for oral surgery.

Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Removal

Your wisdom teeth, or your third molars, usually come through between starting in your teen years or early 20s. If there isn’t enough space in your jaw to surface, they may come through in the wrong position. Food can get trapped in between wisdom teeth that aren’t in the right position, giving bacteria space to grow and increasing your chances of developing cavities. If they are impacted, then that means that they are trapped either under your gums or in your jaw.

Therefore, the benefits of removing your wisdom teeth include:

  • No longer suffering from headaches
  • Reduced risk of periodontal disease
  • If your orthodontist recommended wisdom teeth removal, and then it’s likely because your teeth were shifting or your jaw was too crowded, having them removed means that you can finally move onto straightening your teeth
